MICHAEL DUDOK DE WIT (Holland, 1953). Director, screenwriter and illustrator, winner of the most important audiovisual awards for his animation works. Not in vain, his figure is among the great references in the world of animation worldwide. As for his productions, they stand out for their delicate and careful workmanship, the primary basis of his style marked by nostalgia and longing.
He studied engraving in Geneva and animation in Farnham (England), where he made his first film: The Interview (1978). After animating for a year in Barcelona, he settled in London in 1980. He worked as a freelancer in different studios, in particular with the production company Richard Purdum Productions, where he directed and animated numerous award-winning advertisements for television and film.
In 1992 he created his short film Tom Sweep (1992), which was followed by The Monk and the Fish monk and the fish, 1994), produced by the French studio FOLIMAGE. With this film he won the César for best animated short, in addition to achieving notable nominations for the Oscar and BAFTA Awards. His best-known short film, Father and Daughter (Father and Daughter, 2000), won the Annecy Grand Prix, an Oscar and a BAFTA. In 2004 he finished his short film The Aroma of Tea (The aroma of tea, 2004).
His debut as a feature film director was supported by Isao Takahata, one of the founders of the legendary Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro…), becoming the studio’s first foreign production. The result was La tortue rouge (The Red Turtle, 2016), one of the most beautiful films of this century, considered a masterpiece and gem of animation of all time. The film was nominated for an Oscar and won the “Un Certain Regard” Special Prize at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, as well as numerous international awards.
